Valgrande-Pajares is the closest ski resort to La Finca del Valle: about 28 kilometres, a long half hour by car and only two roads. Roughly half the distance to San Isidro. Valgrande-Pajares in a nutshell
It sits in the Asturian council of Lena, just over the Puerto de Pajares mountain pass, on the natural border between Asturias and León. It is one of the oldest resorts in Spain: it has been running since 1954. The skiable area is around 30 kilometres of runs between 1,450 and 1,890 metres of altitude, with green, blue, red and black routes, so it works both for beginners and for those after a proper gradient. The most technical sectors are Cuitu Negru, Valle del Sol and El Tubo.

Half an hour along the Ruta de la Plata
The drive is impossible to get wrong. Leave Vegacervera on the LE-3513 towards La Vid, join the N-630 —the old Ruta de la Plata— in the Bernesga valley and follow it up to the pass. The resort appears just after you crest it. Two roads and no toll.

Chains, the pass and common sense
This has to be said plainly, because it is what shapes a snow weekend more than anything: access is over the Puerto de Pajares, and when it really snows the Spanish traffic authority can require snow chains or close the pass to vehicles without them. Always carry them in season and check the road status before you set off. If the pass gets difficult, the alternative is the AP-66 tunnel, which is a toll road but stays open almost always.
Sleeping down in the valley works in your favour precisely here: you are below the pass, at low altitude, with a warm house and a clear road. If the top is closed one morning you are not stranded in the middle of nowhere: you have the whole valley to explore and you try again the next day.
Pajares or San Isidro: which suits you
Both are within reach from here and they do not compete, they complement each other. Pajares is half the distance and the obvious choice for getting there and back without losing half a morning in the car. San Isidro is around 55 minutes away, bigger and known for being more family-friendly, and it pays off when the snow report is clearly better there. That is exactly the advantage of sleeping in the Valle de Vegacervera: you choose in the morning, based on the report, instead of having gambled when you booked.
