Where to sleep near Valporquero Cave

Where to sleep near Valporquero Cave: La Finca del Valle rural houses, 10 minutes from the cave, León

Valporquero Cave is the must-see visit of the León mountains: more than a million years of water sculpting the limestone into monumental chambers. And the best way to see it without rushing or queuing is to sleep right next to it: La Finca del Valle is 10 minutes from the entrance, in the very same Valle de Vegacervera.

Valporquero Cave in a nutshell

A constant seven degrees all year round and a succession of chambers that look deliberately designed: Pequeñas Maravillas, Maravillas, the Gran Rotonda, the active water course. The classic guided tour lasts around one hour and is suitable for everyone. For those who want more, there is a longer caving route and, in season, caving-canyoning activities along the underground water course. We tell you all about it in our complete guide to Valporquero Cave.

10 minutes from the ticket office

Sleeping next to the cave changes the experience: you can book the first visit of the morning —the least crowded— and be at the ticket office in 10 minutes, without waking up at dawn or driving at night. After the visit, you head back home to eat in your own kitchen or go down to Boñar for lunch, and the afternoon is free for the Hoces, the viewpoints or simply the terrace. In August and on bank-holiday weekends, when the cave fills up, this advantage is worth its weight in gold.

Cave + valley plan in two days

Day 1. Arrival from 4:00 pm, an evening stroll through the Hoces de Vegacervera —the gorge you can see from the cave road—, a relaxed dinner and stargazing from the terrace. Day 2. Valporquero Cave first thing in the morning, lunch in Boñar or in the valley, and the afternoon at the Mirador de la Atalaya or discovering the Maravillas and legends of the area. Two days that feel like four.

Beyond the classic tour

The surroundings of the cave hold more secrets: the Pequeñas Maravillas, a second cavity with more intimate visits; the long route for cavers; the Valporquero waterfall that gives the village its name; and the path that climbs to the clifftop village of Valporquero de Torío. All of it less than 15 minutes from home, which makes the finca the perfect base camp for exploring the León karst.

Tips for your visit

Bring a jacket even if it is 35 degrees outside: inside it is a constant 7 ºC. Closed, comfortable footwear. In summer, on bank-holiday weekends and at Easter, buy your ticket online in advance —slots sell out—. With small children, the classic tour is perfect; kids over 10-12 usually enjoy it much more if you present it as an adventure. And if you travel with your dog: it cannot go into the cave, but it is welcome in our houses on request and on every trail in the valley.
