The getaway without the early start
The great advantage of having a rural house near León city is that the getaway starts whenever you want. Leave work on a Friday at 6:00 pm and by 6:45 pm you are checking in. At 7:30 pm you are strolling through the Hoces de Vegacervera in the last light of the day. At 9:00 pm you are having dinner with local produce. No early mornings, no airports, no summer traffic jams: the mountains are closer to you than the shopping mall.
What to see in León city before heading up to the valley
If you are coming from further afield, the perfect combination is city + valley. Spend the morning in León: the Cathedral and its stained-glass windows, the Basílica de San Isidoro with the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art, the Barrio Húmedo for vermouth and tapas, San Marcos and the MUSAC if contemporary art is your thing. Have a good lunch —in León it is almost compulsory— and head up to the valley in the late afternoon. In 35 minutes you go from tapas to total silence.
From the A-66 to silence in half an hour
Access is easy all year round: from the A-66 (Madrid–Valladolid–Asturias) you take the La Vecilla turn-off and the CL-626 winds up the Torío valley to Vegacervera. No tolls, no tricky mountain passes, and a road that, as it climbs, becomes part of the show. If you are coming from Madrid, it is about three and a half hours door to door: the classic weekend getaway that does not eat up your Friday on the road.
Weekend plans combining city and mountains
The urban option: Saturday morning in León city —cathedral, museum and vermouth—, lunch in town and an afternoon in the mountains: the Hoces at sunset and a night at the finca. The fully rural option: Saturday at the Valporquero Cave and the viewpoints, Sunday on an easy hiking route and a farewell cocido maragato. How far is La Finca del Valle from León city?
About 38 kilometres, roughly a 35-minute drive from the centre of León via the A-66 and the CL-626. All year round, with no mountain passes.
Can you get there by public transport?
Public transport to the valley is very limited, so we recommend coming by car. Access is easy all year round and there is parking right next to the houses.
Where can you do some shopping nearby?
There is a supermarket in La Vecilla de Curueño (10 minutes away), and more shops in Boñar (12 km). Many guests do their shopping in León before coming up.
Is it worth it for just one night?
Yes: it is the perfect express getaway from León. Set off on a Saturday afternoon and come back after lunch on Sunday — enough time for the cave, the gorges and a terrace under the stars.
